I’ve Decided to be a Pantry Tither March 1, 2010

As I was surfing the web awhile back, I came across the phrase “Pantry Tithe”.  Immediately, an idea of what this phrase meant popped into my mind.  As I read further, I realized that my idea of the term and this particular author’s idea were two different things.  She talked about how she bought  items each week that were specifically for the purpose of building her pantry.  These items were her “Pantry Tithe”.  I actually do this, as well, but I have always just called it stockpiling!  Anyway, it got me thinking.  When I think about the term “Pantry Tithe”, this is what comes to my mind.  Purposefully taking items from my stockpile to give to others.  I try to do this on a pretty consistent basis….but many times I’m not as intentional about doing this as I would like to be.  So, I’ve decided to be a “Pantry Tither”!!  Beginning this month, I will intentionally set aside 5 grocery items and 5 personal or household items every week or two for the express purpose of giving it away.  The grocery items will go to the food pantry at my church and the personal/household items will go to a local home for women and children that have suffered domestic violence. That doesn’t mean that I won’t also be giving when other opportunities come up to help someone in need.  That will just be considered giving over and above my regular tithe!  If all of us who shop by stockpiling and using coupons would do this, can you imagine the difference that we could make in our communities?!?  So, what do you think?  Would you like to join me in being a “Pantry Tither”?  If so, I’d love to hear what you will be doing with your “tithe”!

    Sandra-
I have been giving for a while, but love the “pantry tithe” title. I enjoy giving to others from the bounty we have, due to couponing. I almost always have a chance to share what we do and people are just fascinated.
I love the colors of your blog.
Thanks so much for sharing the joys of couponing. It is truly a wonderful thing. Cindy and I have decided it is our hobby. 🙂

We have been soooo… Blessed by how many items we get for free or next to free! One of our New Year’s resolutions was to donate at least 2 bags full of groceries to our local food bank, which happens to be about 2 miles from our house. It feels good to know that not only has the Lord blessed our family, but He has also provided so that we may be able to help someone else’s family as well. 🙂

  3. I also try to give items from my stockpile on a pretty regular basis, but I love the name “pantry tithe.” I also “buy” FREE or nearly FREE items that I know I will not use for the purpose of donating (things like glucose monitors, baby items, and cat food… seeing as I have no use for any of those items).

I love this:) I signed up to volunteer at my local Food Bank in two weeks, and I’m bringing my coupon-ing “pantry tithe” with me:) (Need a few more boxes to hold it all!!) I think I may borrow this phrase (If that’s ok), to generate more items donate-able items from my co-workers before I go!

    • Hi Tia!
Yes, you can certainly “borrow” this phrase. I’m so glad to hear that so many others are regularly giving! Even if we each just give a couple of items…what a huge difference that can make in someone’s life! Thanks for stopping by!

Awesome! The best part of being coupon crazy is being able to give more and give often. My husband works at our church and I’m able to hand him a bag of “Manna Ministry” needs at least once a week to take to work and drop off in the bins. It’s taught me a lot about being generous and helping others even when we think we’re “in need”. I’ve often heard that a huge need among food pantries and outreaches is feminine hygiene products. They are expensive and people don’t think to give them. Being involved in the coupon world has allowed me to donate several of these items that I got for cheap or free. I wouldn’t change my “pantry tithing” for anything. Thanks for coining the term. 🙂
